Construction begins on Pakistan’s mega Mohmand dam

Federal Minister inaugurates second phase of Mohammad Power Project

ISlAMABAD:Pakistan has taken a major step forward in building the Mohmand Dam as construction on the main structure has officially begun. The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) announced the milestone, marking progress in one of the country’s largest hydropower projects.

Federal Minister for Water Resources Mian Muhammad Moin Wattoo visited the site to inspect the ongoing work, accompanied by WAPDA Chairman Engineer Lieutenant General (retd) Sajjad Ghani. Officials confirmed that key phases like river diversion and foundation work have already been completed.

The 213-meter-high Mohmand Dam will be the fifth-largest Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam (CFRD) in the world. Once completed in 2027-28, it will store 1.29 million acre-feet of water, irrigate over 18,000 acres of land, and supply 300 million gallons of drinking water daily to Peshawar. Additionally, the dam’s hydropower plant will generate 2.86 billion units of electricity annually for the national grid.

Construction is currently underway at 14 different project sites, including tunnels, spillways, and the power house. Minister Wattoo emphasized the government’s commitment to completing the dam on schedule, stating it will address Pakistan’s growing water and electricity needs.
