Deadly Earthquake strikes Afghanistan, buildings collapsed

6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the eastern part of Russia’s remote Kuril Islands early Saturday

A powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake has struck northern Afghanistan, killing at least nine people and injuring many more.

The quake’s epicenter was in the Hindu Kush mountains near the Bisawal region. It was very shallow—only 6.2 miles deep—which caused strong tremors to be felt across a wide area, particularly in the city of Jalalabad.

The shaking destroyed several houses and sent panicked residents rushing into open spaces for safety. Rescue teams are now working in the affected areas to help victims.

This is the largest in a series of quakes to hit the region in recent hours, with others measuring between 4.0 and 5.0 in magnitude. Scientists note that these could be foreshocks, warning of a potentially larger earthquake to come, though that possibility is currently uncertain.

Local authorities and aid agencies are assisting with the response and urge citizens to stay alert and follow official instructions.
