The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) meeting, chaired by Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, took several important economic decisions, including significant initiatives for electric vehicles and the education sector.
The meeting approved a subsidy scheme of Rs 9 billion for electric bikes and rickshaws.
According to the Finance Ministry, 40,000 electric bikes and 1,000 electric rickshaws will be provided in the initial phase of this scheme, which aims to improve the environment and reduce fuel costs.
The ECC also approved providing free electric bikes to meritorious students to encourage students who perform well in the academic field.
Furthermore, the committee approved a technical grant of Rs 30 billion for payment of claims under the Hawala Remittance Scheme. In this regard, the Finance Ministry and the State Bank have been directed to devise an effective payment mechanism and submit a complete analysis of the scheme.
During the meeting, in-principle approval was also given for a bailout grant of Rs 2 billion for Quaid-e-Azam University. At the same time, the university has been asked to present a comprehensive plan for financial self-sufficiency so that financial stability can be achieved on a permanent basis in the future.
