EU lifts economic sanctions on Syria, following US move last week

The European Union has removed economic sanctions on Syria in a move aimed at supporting the country’s recovery after years of conflict. This decision follows a similar action taken by the United States last week.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced the policy shift, stating, *”We want to help the Syrian people rebuild a new, inclusive and peaceful Syria.”* She emphasized the bloc’s continued commitment to supporting Syrians after 14 years of crisis.

Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shaibani welcomed the decision, saying it would enhance the country’s security and stability. Analysts view the move as significant recognition of Syria’s current leadership and a step toward improving economic conditions.

The sanctions were originally imposed during Bashar al-Assad’s rule before his ouster in December. Their removal is expected to facilitate financial transactions and help stabilize Syria’s economy.
