The federal government has decided to remove provincial ‘electricity duty’ from electricity bills.
Federal Minister for Energy Owais Leghari sent a letter to the Chief Ministers of all provinces.
In the letter, the Federal Minister for Energy said that the collection of provincial ‘electricity duty’ through electricity bills will stop from July 2025.
He said that they want to reduce the burden of taxes in electricity bills, and consumers are confused by multiple charges and duties in the bills.
In the letter, the Federal Minister also highlighted government measures to reduce electricity rates and mentioned the review of IPP contracts and continuing work on reducing the ROE of government power plants.
Owais Leghari demanded that the provinces suggest methods of collecting duty from alternative sources and said that the bills should reflect only the actual cost of electricity; this is our goal.
