Fifth monsoon spell to hit Punjab from July 28: PDMA

LAHORE: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has announced that Punjab will experience its fifth monsoon spell from July 28 to July 31, with heavy rainfall expected across most districts.

The PDMA has warned of possible urban flooding, flash floods, landslides in hilly regions, and damage to weak or poorly constructed buildings.

Rain is expected between July 28 and 31 in Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Khushab, Sargodha, Mianwali, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, Faisalabad, and Okara. Additional rainfall is forecast between July 29 and 31 in Dera Ghazi Khan, Bhakkar, Bahawalpur, Khanewal, Pakpattan, Vehari, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, and Rajanpur.

Punjab Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed has directed all commissioners and deputy commissioners to remain on high alert. Emergency control rooms and Rescue 1122 teams have also been mobilized to handle potential emergencies. He noted that Punjab has received 73 percent more rainfall this year compared to the same period last year and urged all departments to remain fully prepared.

The PDMA Director General warned that heavy rainfall could lead to landslides in Murree and Galiyat and emphasized that vulnerable structures may collapse. Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from flood-prone areas, and refrain from driving through flowing water.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a report on monsoon-related damages from June 26 to July 25, 2025. A total of 266 people have lost their lives, and 633 have been injured across the country. The fatalities include 94 men, 46 women, and 126 children. Punjab reported the highest toll with 144 deaths and 493 injuries. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 63 deaths and 79 injuries, Sindh reported 25 deaths and 40 injuries, while Balochistan had 16 deaths and 4 injuries. Eight deaths each were reported from Islamabad and Gilgit-Baltistan, and two from Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

In the past 24 hours alone, 69 houses were destroyed. Overall, 1,158 houses have been demolished, and 366 livestock lost due to flooding.
