PESHAWAR: At least five children lost their lives and 12 others sustained injuries when a mortar shell exploded in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lakki Marwat district.
According to sources, the tragic incident occurred in the jurisdiction of Saddar Police Station, where children discovered a mortar shell outside their home and unknowingly brought it inside. The device detonated while they were playing with it.
All 17 injured were rushed to the nearest city hospital by rescue teams. Tragically, five children—aged between six and twelve—were declared dead upon arrival.
Following the incident, local administration officials visited the hospital and instructed medical staff to provide maximum care to the injured. A police investigation is underway.
This marks the sixth such incident involving unexploded ordnance in Lakki Marwat over the past two months. On June 29, two Pakistan Army officers were martyred and three injured when an IED exploded near their vehicle in the Wanda Simo area. The blast also completely destroyed the military vehicle.
