Flood emergency in Punjab; “next 12 hours critical,” says Tarar

Army Called In as Narowal Grapples with Severe Flooding

ISLAMABAD : A major flood emergency is developing across several regions of Punjab, triggered by relentless heavy rains and dangerously rising water levels in the country’s key rivers.

Federal Minister Atta Tarar has termed the next 12 hours as “very important.” He reported that 400,000 cusecs of water is currently flowing through Head Marala, with an expected surge to 700,000 cusecs.

A high flood level has been recorded in the Chenab River, prompting authorities to issue immediate evacuation orders for citizens in all adjacent areas. Alarms have also been sounded in several areas along the Ravi River, including Lahore and Shahdara.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a widespread flood alert, warning that private housing societies and multiple districts—including Sahiwal, Chichawatni, Kasur, and Mailsi—could be severely affected.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed all ministers and members of parliament to immediately reach their constituencies to monitor relief activities. All relevant agencies are on high alert, and the process of evacuating riverside populations to safer places is currently underway.
