ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Sunday announced a hike in fuel prices for the next fortnight, increasing the price of petrol by Rs4.80 per litre to Rs262.59, up from Rs254.64.
According to a notification issued by the Finance Division, the revised petrol price will be effective from June 16. The price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has also been raised by Rs7.95 per litre, bringing it to Rs258.43 from the previous Rs253.63.
In the last pricing cycle, petrol prices were increased slightly by Re1, amid relatively stable global oil markets.
Petrol is commonly used in private vehicles, motorcycles, rickshaws, and small cars—making this hike particularly burdensome for middle- and lower-middle-income groups who rely on it for daily commuting.
High-speed diesel, on the other hand, fuels the majority of the transport and agricultural sectors, including trucks, buses, trains, tractors, and tube wells. As a result, the diesel price hike is considered inflationary, likely to push up the cost of transporting goods and lead to higher prices for essential commodities like vegetables and other food items.
