Following extensive negotiations between the government and the sugar industry, it has been decided to set the ex-mill price of sugar at Rs 165 per kilogram. The Ministry of Food Security announced that this decision aims to maintain price stability and provide relief to the public.
The ministry has instructed all provincial governments to ensure the availability of sugar in light of this decision, to protect the public from the impacts of inflation.
It is worth noting that the federal government recently approved the import of 500,000 metric tons of sugar, while permitting the export of 750,000 tons from June last year to October 2024. According to the Ministry of Food Security, the goal of allowing imports was to maintain market balance; however, prices have continued to rise due to hoarding, which has raised public concerns.
