ISLAMABAD: A new medical study revealed that drinking green tea regularly may help protect against obesity and type 2 diabetes.
According to research conducted at São Paulo University, experiments were conducted on rats to test the effects of green tea. The study revealed that green tea consumption leads to weight loss, improves glucose sensitivity, and reduces insulin resistance.
To simulate typical modern diets, the rats were first fed a high-calorie diet resembling Western junk food for four weeks. Then, for the next 12 weeks, the rats continued on the same diet but were also given green tea extract equivalent to three cups of green tea daily.
The research found that the flavonoids present in pure green tea played a key role in these beneficial effects. The results suggest that regular green tea consumption could be a useful aid in preventing obesity and type 2 diabetes.
These findings were published in the Journal of Cell Biochemistry and Function.
