A new study has found that almost half of diabetes patients worldwide are unaware of their disease-based condition.

According to researchers, an estimated 44 percent of people worldwide who are 15 years of age or older and who suffer from diabetes (sugar) are unaware of this deadly disease.

This research report was reported in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology. The head of this study, Lauren Stafford, said in a news release that by 2050, it is feared that 1.3 billion people will be living with this disease.

According to them, if half of them are unaware of this serious and potentially fatal disease, it could easily become a silent epidemic. According to the researchers, the most dangerous thing is that even among those who know they are diabetics, less than half of them are able to control their blood sugar levels.

The study found that about 91 percent of people diagnosed with diabetes are using some kind of medication, but only 42 percent control their blood sugar levels adequately.
