Heatwave alert in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: temperatures to Soar 5–7°C above normal from June 7 to 12

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave alert across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), warning of a significant rise in daytime temperatures from June 7 to 12, just as the Eid holidays approach. According to the PDMA letter circulated to all district administrations, temperatures are expected to increase by 5 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal levels, raising concerns over public health, agriculture, and water resources.

The alert highlights that the southern and central regions of KP will be most affected by the intensified heat. In addition to the soaring temperatures, the PDMA has also forecast dust storms and strong winds during this period, urging citizens to remain cautious and limit outdoor activities.

Health and Safety Risks

The PDMA has cautioned that the hot and dry weather conditions could result in heatstroke and cause pressure on the region’s water reservoirs. The rising heat is also likely to accelerate the melting of snow in the upper areas of the province, which could impact river flows and water availability downstream.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors during peak heat hours—particularly between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM—and increase their water intake to stay hydrated. The elderly and children are especially urged to avoid direct sun exposure during this time.

Precautionary Measures and Public Awareness

In its advisory, the PDMA has instructed all relevant departments—including health, medical, paramedics, and rescue services—to remain on high alert. Heatstroke centres are to be activated and kept operational throughout the alert period to provide immediate care in case of emergencies.

The PDMA also emphasised the need for an active public awareness campaign to educate citizens on how to protect themselves during the heatwave. Farmers have been advised to exercise caution during harvesting activities and to ensure that livestock are properly sheltered and hydrated.

Vehicle and Travel Advisory

For those planning to travel during Eid, the PDMA spokesperson advised vehicle owners to check their engine water levels and tire pressure before setting out, as extreme heat can affect vehicle performance and increase the risk of breakdowns.

Institutional Preparedness

“All relevant institutions must remain vigilant and ready to respond to any emergencies arising due to the heatwave,” the PDMA letter stressed. It reiterated that coordination between district administrations, rescue departments, and healthcare facilities is crucial for minimising the impact of the extreme weather.

With Eid-ul-Adha around the corner and large-scale travel and gatherings expected, the public is urged to follow official guidelines and stay updated on weather advisories issued by the authorities.
