Heatwave to grip most of Pakistan from tomorrow: Met Office

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted that most parts of Pakistan will likely face heatwave conditions starting tomorrow (April 13).

The Met Office warned that a high-pressure system will grip the upper atmosphere from April 13. This may trigger heatwave conditions across much of the country.

The Met Office said these conditions could intensify into a severe heatwave in southern Pakistan from Monday, April 14.

“Day temperatures may stay 6 to 8°C above normal in southern parts — Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan — from April 13 to 18,” the department stated.

It also predicted that temperatures will remain 4 to 6°C above normal in central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

The PMD advised people, especially children, women, and the elderly, to stay safe. It urged citizens to avoid direct sunlight and stay hydrated.

Farmers should plan their crop activities, such as wheat harvesting, with the weather in mind. They are also advised to protect their livestock from extreme heat.

The Met Office warned that rising temperatures may accelerate snowmelt in northern areas between April 14 and 18.

All relevant authorities have been asked to remain alert and take steps to prevent any emergencies.

Pakistan continues to face changing weather patterns, including floods, droughts, cyclones, and heatwaves.

Experts link these changes to climate change caused by human activity.

In 2022, record-breaking rains caused floods that killed over 1,700 people, displaced millions, and caused $30 billion in damages.
