PESHAWAR: The Routine life of the citizens was badly affected as heavy rains lashed Rawalpindi and Islamabad on the third consecutive day, resulting in floods and inundation of water near houses and commercial centre.
The twin cities recorded 129 mm of rain, resulting in high water in various streams to a dangerous level. According to the water and sanitation agency Rawalpindi, the water level in Nala Lei has reached 16 feet at Katarian and 14 feet at the Gowalmandi bridge, after which alarm sirens have been sounded around the drain.
Talking to Pakhtun Digital, Sajid Khan, resident of H-13 Islamabad, said that the last night rain has caused a flood-like situation in the area, while several vehicles were trapped owing to inundation of water. He said that some of those houses, which were situated in the slums of Rawalpindi, were facing an imminent risk of roof collapse.
Keeping in view the sensitivity of the situation, Rescue 1122, WASA, Civil Defence and other relief agencies have been put on high alert. The Managing Director of WASA has also contacted the triple One brigade, while it has been decided to call the Pakistan Army in case of emergency.
According to the WASA spokesperson, all agencies are on alert, and the flow of Nala Lei is being continuously monitored. Citizens have been instructed to avoid going near Nala Lei.
On the other hand, the Meteorological Department has predicted more rain, which is expected to worsen the situation further. The administration has appealed to the public to immediately contact the relevant institutions in case of any emergency and follow precautionary measures.
