Heavy rains in KP raise risk of glacial lake outbursts

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued an alert indicating that intermittent heavy rains are expected in various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa next week. Due to these heavy and continuous rains, there is a risk of glacial lake outbursts in the glacial regions of the province.

Details from the report highlight that residents of Upper and Lower Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Upper Kohistan should remain vigilant regarding potential glacier eruptions. The heavy rainfall may also lead to landslides and flooding in local rivers and canals within the affected districts.

The district administration has been instructed to closely monitor sensitive areas and to conduct timely warning and evacuation drills. People are advised to avoid unnecessary travel near rivers and canals, and to refrain from driving through fast-flowing waters. Evacuation sites have been established in areas at risk, and emergency equipment and rescue services are on standby.

Tourists are urged to stay alert and take necessary precautions. Additionally, the National Highway Authority (NHA), Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), and Communication & Works (C&W) departments have been directed to remain vigilant and implement preventive measures for the prompt restoration of roads.
