ISLAMABAD: Heavy thunderstorms and intense rainfall lashed the federal capital on Thursday, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department warning of continued downpours over the next 24-36 hours. The sixth spell of monsoon rains is expected to persist until Friday, raising risks of urban flooding in low-lying areas and landslides in hilly regions.
The Met Office alerted authorities about “very heavy” rainfall in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, and Mansehra over the next 3-6 hours, with concerns over river flooding and road disruptions. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay clear of waterways.
Precautionary Measures:
-
Disaster management teams put on high alert
-
Citizens in low-lying areas urged to relocate temporarily
-
Traffic police monitoring waterlogged roads
The ongoing rains follow last week’s flooding in Islamabad’s Sector E-11, where rescue operations were needed. Officials warn that nullahs could overflow if rains exceed 100mm.
