UPPER DIR:(NASIR ZADA) The historic Dar-ul-Salam Mosque, located in Thall village at the gateway of Kumrat Valley in Upper Dir, remains a centre of tourist attraction for its unique architecture and historical significance.
Situated 75 kilometres away from the main Bazar of Dir, the mosque is a great symbol of National heritage for its unique design and wooden work, which demonstrates the speciality of and expertise of the senior carpenters.
Talking to Pakhtun Digital the custodian of the mosque Shahabuddin, said that this mosque was initially built three hundred years ago, but it was destroyed by fire at one time. Later, the mosque was rebuilt in 1953.
He said that the villagers brought heavy pieces of wood from the Kumrat forests to build this mosque with an eye-catching design. The large, flat roofs and walls are all made of wood, while mud is also used above the floor to keep the mosque cold in the summer season and warm in winter.
The important thing is that no nails have been used in it. The craftsmen of that era designed it attractively without modern machinery. The mosque has two roofs, which are often filled with worshipers.
Tourists visiting Kumrat definitely visit this mosque. When this mosque was built, the locals used to bring this wood with their help, using ropes and other heavy objects to relocate the wooden parts from the forest to the village.
The two-floor building is built in such a manner that it looks like a huge Bungalow with a slowly narrowing dome shape on the third floor, looking beautiful from the surrounding localities of Dir Upper.
