Imran Khan challenges LHC May 9 verdict in Supreme Court

Supreme Court approves review petitions, strips PTI of reserved seats

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) decision to reject his post-arrest bail petitions in multiple cases related to the May 9 riots, as reported by state media.

The LHC had earlier dismissed Khan’s bail requests in eight separate cases, including high-profile incidents such as the attacks on Jinnah House, Askari Tower, and the arson at Shadman Police Station. The verdict was issued by a division bench led by Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi.

In his petition, Imran Khan contended that the allegations against him are baseless, emphasizing that he was in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Islamabad at the time the violence occurred—making his involvement implausible.

He further argued that the First Information Reports (FIRs) lack substantial evidence, and that the prosecution’s statements contain contradictions that undermine the credibility of the case. The petition also highlighted a five-month delay by police in pursuing the cases, which Khan claimed points to malicious intent.

Khan maintained that the evidence presented is weak, noting that several co-accused individuals have already been granted bail. He alleged that the cases were politically motivated and violated his constitutional rights.

Calling the charges a product of political victimization, the PTI founder requested the Supreme Court to set aside the LHC verdict and grant him post-arrest bail.
