ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in a televised address on Saturday castigated India for imposing an “unprovoked and unjust war” against Pakistan.
Following the announcement of a ceasefire between Pakistan and India, expressed deep gratitude to the nation, armed forces, political leadership, and international partners who supported efforts to de-escalate tensions.
Pakistan had accepted the ceasefire proposal “in the interest of 230 million Pakistanis,” following weeks of heightened military tensions triggered by the April 22 Pahalgam attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which killed 26 people. India blamed Pakistan-based groups for the attack—a claim strongly denied by Islamabad.
The prime minister acknowledged the U.S. role in facilitating the ceasefire, thanking President Donald Trump for his “sincere and constructive” efforts. He also recognized the contributions of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Türkiye, Kuwait, the UK, the UN Secretary-General, and other allied nations.
“Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Emir Sheikh Tamim of Qatar, and President Erdoğan gave us strength in a difficult time. I am deeply thankful,” he said.
He extended special thanks to China, praising President Xi Jinping and the Chinese people for their steadfast support. “China has always stood by Pakistan without calculating gains or losses. This 78-year friendship is something we deeply cherish.”
The premier paid tribute to the armed forces and honored the families of fallen soldiers, vowing their sacrifices would never be forgotten. He also thanked political allies and opposition leaders, including Nawaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari, for their unity and counsel.
Appreciating the public, especially social media users, Shehbaz lauded their role in countering disinformation and promoting national solidarity. “Every Pakistani who stood up online became a digital soldier for the truth,” he said.
Looking ahead, he called for national unity and hard work, urging the country to build on this moment. “Let’s strive so hard that the world is left in awe—just as it is today by the bravery of our armed forces.”
He concluded with a patriotic note: “Armed Forces Zindabad, Pakistan Zindabad.”
