India has opened all the spillways of the Salal Dam, leading to an anticipated rise in the water level of the Chenab River to dangerous levels. The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert for very high flood levels expected within the next 36 hours.
PDMA Punjab Director General Irfan Ali Kathia stated that no prior warning was received from India regarding the release of water into the Chenab River. As a result, instructions have been issued to the administration in the relevant districts of Punjab to remain on high alert.
Irfan Ali Kathia has indicated that a major flood could reach the Raila Head Marala area within the next two days, potentially increasing the water level to hazardous levels.
The DG of PDMA has directed all commissioners, deputy commissioners, and concerned officials to be present in the field and prepared to respond to any emergency situations. Furthermore, he reported that all relevant institutions are actively deployed in the field in light of the current flood threat, and the public has been advised to take their own safety precautions.
