India cannot unilaterally abrogate Indus Waters Treaty, says Ishaq Dar

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has said that the Indus River is a lifeline for Pakistan’s 240 million people. Pakistan will take all appropriate measures to protect its legitimate water rights under the Indus Waters Treaty.

A high-level meeting was held at the Foreign Office under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on the Indus Waters Treaty. The meeting discussed the strategy for continuing the treaty in light of the Indian initiative.

The meeting was attended by the Ministers of Law and Justice and Water Resources, the Attorney General, senior officials and technical experts.

Addressing the meeting, Ishaq Dar said that Pakistan will take all appropriate measures to protect its legitimate share of the water guaranteed under the Indus Waters Treaty.

The Foreign Minister stressed that India’s unilateral and illegal move to keep the treaty in abeyance is against the established principles of inter-state relations, international law and the provisions of the treaty itself.

He further said that the Indus Waters Treaty is important for regional stability, and its sanctity should be maintained.

Ishaq Dar said that the water of the Indus River is a lifeline for the 240 million people of Pakistan.

The Deputy Prime Minister condemned Indian efforts to weaponise water and reiterated that Pakistan will continue to advocate for full implementation of the agreement to protect its water rights and ensure the welfare of its people.
