Islamabad strongly condemns Indian defence minister’s remarks on Pakistan’s nuclear program

Islamabad rebukes Modi’s remarks on Kashmir visit after Pahalgam incident

Pakistan has strongly condemned the recent remarks made by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh regarding its nuclear arsenal during a visit to Indian-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement issued today, Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan described the comments as “irresponsible” and reflective of “profound insecurity and frustration” over Pakistan’s robust conventional and strategic deterrence capabilities.

“Pakistan’s conventional forces are sufficient to deter Indian aggression without resorting to the kind of nuclear brinkmanship New Delhi accuses others of,” the spokesperson said. “Such statements are not only misleading but also betray a lack of understanding of the role and mandate of international institutions like the IAEA.”

The spokesperson also highlighted serious concerns over the safety and security of nuclear and radioactive materials within India, citing multiple incidents of theft and illicit trafficking.

“Just last year, five individuals were reportedly found with a radioactive device stolen from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Dehradun,” he said. “In another case, a gang was caught in possession of Californium — a highly radioactive substance valued at over $100 million. In 2021 alone, there were three reported thefts involving Californium.”

“These repeated lapses raise serious questions about India’s nuclear security protocols and point to the possible existence of a black market for dual-use materials,” he added.

Pakistan urged the international community and the IAEA to take note of these troubling incidents and called on India to ensure the security of its nuclear facilities and materials.

Earlier today, India’s Defence Minister had suggested that Pakistan’s nuclear weapons should be placed under IAEA supervision, calling the country a “rogue and irresponsible nation.”

Pakistan has firmly rejected these allegations, reaffirming its commitment to international norms and the safety and security of its nuclear assets.
