KP faces surge in stomach illnesses with over 50,000 cases reported

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Grapples With Sharp Rise in Stomach Diseases

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa KP has reported a worrying jump in gastrointestinal diseases, with 50,765 cases recorded across the province in just one week, according to health officials.

The provincial capital Peshawar, along with Charsadda, Nowshera, and Swat, are the most affected areas, shows data from July 21–27 released by the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response System.

Alongside stomach illnesses, health workers documented 5,482 respiratory infections, 7,530 mosquito-borne diseases, and 938 suspected animal-transmitted infections. While diseases like Congo virus and dengue remain under close watch, their numbers haven’t risen sharply this week.

Authorities noted that over half of KP’s districts submitted timely reports, but Orakzai, Kurram, and South Waziristan lagged in sharing health data. The surge has raised concerns about sanitation and disease control efforts as hospitals brace for more patients.
