KP Finance department releases 5223.25 million for Public sector Universities

PESHAWAR: To overcome the financial crisis in public sector Universities, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has released Rs5,223.25 million for the payment of pension dues and quarterly grants to public sector universities.

According to a letter issued by the Finance Department, this amount has been transferred to the Higher Education Department to pay the pension arrears and grants for the first quarter of 2025-26. According to the letter, Rs3631 million has been released for pension dues, while Rs1592 million has been released for the first quarter of the current year. A total of Rs5,223.25 million has been released.

This amount has been transferred as grant-in-aid under the Higher Education Department. The letter clarified that the payment of the amount will be made in compliance with all legal requirements, and it will be accounted for under the budget 2025-26.

The letter has directed the Higher Education Department to clear all pending pension dues on a priority basis. Along with this, universities should be required not to allow further pension dues to accumulate in the future and take immediate steps for self-reliance and financial stability.

This amount has been released at a time when many government universities were facing severe financial difficulties in paying pension dues. The provision of funds will not only provide immediate relief to retired employees but will also improve the financial management of the universities.

The letter also states that an audit copy of the expenditure should be prepared and sent to the Finance Department to ensure transparency and accountability.
