Food authority raids eateries in KP

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority conducted major operations against substandard and unhealthy food in different areas of Peshawar, seizing and discarding a large quantity of substandard milk, fake drinks and adulterated spices.

According to Food Authority spokesperson, the food safety team raided a dairy warehouse in Sheikhabad, from where 900 Litres of spoiled milk were recovered, which was destroyed on the spot.

Similarly, inspections of chicken shops, general stores and hotels were also conducted in Hashtangari Phatak, during which about 50 litres of spoiled frying oil were recovered from a kebab hotel and destroyed on the spot. The food safety team inspected vehicles carrying various food items on GT Road late last night and during the checking, 5500 litres of substandard drinks were recovered from one of the vehicles, samples of which were tested through a mobile laboratory and declared unsatisfactory.

The drinks and the vehicle were seized as per the law. According to further details, various spice grinding units on Charsadda Road were also inspected, from where 100 kilograms of adulterated turmeric were recovered. Fines were imposed on the concerned units for poor cleanliness and violation of SOPs. The spokesperson said that fines were imposed on the owners for violating the hygiene rules and further action was initiated under the Food Safety Act.

Director General Food Authority Wasif Saeed appreciated the food safety teams for their successful operations and said that actions against adulteration mafia and substandard and harmful food items will continue. Provincial Food Minister Zahir Shah Toro made it clear that those who play with the health of citizens will not be given any concessions and strict legal action will be taken against them.
