PESHAWAR – Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi paid an official visit to the Peshawar office of the Gems and Gemological Institute of Pakistan (GGIP), where he expressed strong support for the development of the province’s gemstone and mineral industry.
During the visit, the Governor awarded certificates to 25 students who successfully completed a specialised training program in gemstone cutting and polishing. This hands-on course is designed to equip young individuals with practical skills to enter the gemstone trade — a sector with immense economic potential in the region.
The Governor was given a comprehensive briefing by General Manager Naveed Mehsud, who explained the institute’s mission, key activities, and achievements. The GGIP aims to harness the rich mineral resources of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by providing technical training, research, and support to young professionals and entrepreneurs interested in the gems and jewellery sector.
Also in attendance was Nauman Bashir, Director of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) Peshawar, who highlighted the importance of enhancing exports and building international connections in the global gemstone market.
Governor Kundi lauded the institute’s efforts to offer technical training despite operating with limited financial resources. “This institution is providing valuable training at minimal costs, and it’s playing a crucial role in skill development for our youth,” he said.
He called upon the federal government to increase support for the gemstone industry, noting that such strategic investment could greatly boost the national economy and provide livelihoods to many. “I will personally advocate for the lifting of restrictions on gemstone exports from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” he added.
Reflecting on the province’s untapped potential, Governor Kundi stressed that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is home to a vast range of precious and semi-precious stones, many of which are still underutilised. “Our gemstone reserves are comparable in value to gold. With the right infrastructure and policy support, this sector can become a major contributor to economic growth,” he remarked.
He also expressed concern about the lack of modern facilities at the institute, describing it as unfortunate given the strategic importance of the training center. “This is a vital institution, and it deserves more attention and resources,” the Governor said.
The Governor’s visit underscored the broader vision of empowering the youth, enhancing vocational education, and promoting industries that have long-term economic sustainability. Stakeholders present at the event expressed hope that the visit would lead to increased governmental and private sector engagement with the region’s gemstone and mineral industries.
