PESHAWAR: The government and opposition in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have reached an initial agreement on the distribution of Senate seats, aiming to avoid a contested election.
According to sources, both sides agreed on the 6/5 formula after late-night talks in Peshawar. Under this formula, the ruling PTI will get 6 seats, while the opposition will secure 5 seats. However, final approval is pending as internal discussions within PTI are still ongoing.
Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has been asked to withdraw PTI’s remaining candidates to ensure a smooth process. The provincial government prefers uncontested elections to avoid political risks, while opposition parties have already agreed on a joint strategy.
A final meeting will be held today to formalize the agreement. Sources say that if voting takes place, the results could be uncertain for both sides, prompting efforts to ensure all candidates win without competition.
The decision is expected to be finalized soon, paving the way for a peaceful Senate election in KP.
