KP Government to Withdraw All Cases Linked to May 9th Riots, Citing Lack of Evidence

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has decided to withdraw cases registered against individuals involved in the May 9th riots, revealed Advocate General Shah Faisal Utmankhel in an exclusive interview with Pakhtun Digital.

A total of 351 cases were filed in connection with the violent protests that erupted on May 9th.

These cases were categorized into two types: those registered under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and those related to ordinary losses. Out of the total, 33 cases were filed under anti-terrorism charges, while the remaining 318 pertained to ordinary losses.

When asked why the government decided to step back from pursuing these cases, the Advocate General explained that the majority of the cases were politically motivated and lacked substantial evidence.

He further elaborated that out of the 33 anti-terrorism cases, 18 have already been dismissed by the courts due to insufficient evidence. The remaining 14 cases are still under trial, but the government expects them to be dismissed as well.

Regarding the 318 ordinary loss-related cases, the Advocate General stated that these will also be withdrawn. So far, 256 out of the 351 total cases have been dismissed, and the remaining 90 are expected to meet the same fate.
