ISLAMABAD: Federal Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has said that words fall short in describing the heartbreaking Swat tragedy, where several lives were lost in a flash flood. Speaking to the media after offering condolences to the victims’ families, the minister expressed deep sorrow and disappointment over the incident.
“Children drowned in front of their mother’s eyes. I have no words for this tragedy,” he said. “But it’s clear there was a complete failure of the rescue system. Unfortunately, this is not the first time such incompetence has been witnessed in that area. Rescue teams arrived empty-handed, without equipment, and had to return without helping.”
The bereaved families, he noted, are requesting that no action be taken against the officials suspended after the incident. “They believe the deaths were destined, and they don’t want anyone punished or held accountable,” he said.
However, the minister strongly criticized the authorities for failing to address safety issues proactively. “While such accidents are the will of Allah, the state has a responsibility to take preventive measures, which, sadly, were not in place,” he added.
Responding to a question, Khawaja Asif avoided political commentary but emphasized that those in power must take their responsibilities seriously. “Governance isn’t about luxury or appearances, it’s a bed of thorns. Leaders must prioritize the welfare of the people over personal or political gains,” he concluded.
