PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Advisor Ehtesham Ali said that the government have decided to hand over the management and supervision of underperforming hospitals in the province to the private sector.

In a statement, he said that initially, 24 hospitals are being outsourced, which include category B, C and D level hospitals.  He added that the aim of outsourcing these hospitals was to provide the best treatment to the public at government expense.

He mentioned that quality and free treatment will be provided in these hospitals at the government rate, and this is not like privatising the hospitals, but is handing over the management and supervision of these hospitals to the private sector.

Government employees of these hospitals will perform their routine duties, while the hospital’s Medical staff, equipment and other shortages will be met by private companies. This initiative will immediately eliminate problems such as timely OPD services, government behaviour, cleanliness, attendance of medical staff and functionality of equipment.

He added that the Independent Monitoring Unit of the health department will monitor these hospitals to check the private sector, and funds of these companies will be deducted for poor performance. These hospitals will have a strong mechanism for redressing public complaints, and if the results are successful, more hospitals will be outsourced in the next phase.
