PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has launched Cochlear Implant Programme (CIP), an innovative treatment option available for children with severe to profound deafness or hearing loss, at the Hayatabad Medical Complex.
This rehabilitation of hearing-impaired children programme was supported and financed by Pakistan Baitul Mal. But now, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to provide funds and include the programme in the Health Card Programme.
Under this initiative, 9 children have so far been successfully operated on at the HMC. Their surgeries were supervised by ENT specialists.
Children aged 6 months to five years can be candidates for this surgery. The hearing-impaired children may have been born deaf or become deaf after learning to speak. As per the reports, each children cost Rs. 2.15 million for treatment.
The hospital termed the successful treatment of the children is a significant breakthrough.
The initiative is supervised and headed by the Medical Director Prof. Dr. Shahzad Akbar. He appraised his ENT team for their excellent work by providing appropriate hearing aid amplification and auditory-verbal speech therapy, and surgery.
According to the hospital administration, this programme will continue in the future so that more and more deserving children can be blessed with hearing.
