KP to add more routes, buses to BRT

PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has decided to extend the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project to more areas of the capital and divisional headquarters of the province.

The decision has been taken during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Khan Gandapur on urban transport and infrastructure. Several major decisions were made to improve public transport and ease traffic congestion in the provincial capital and divisional headquarters.

The meeting reviewed the extension of BRT services Ring Road, Bara Road, and Khyber Road.

To address the rising demand, authorities approved the purchase of 72 new diesel-hybrid buses. The civil works for these additions will be completed within six months.

The meeting also reviewed development work progress on BRT commercial plazas in Peshawar. Officials confirmed that the Mall of Hayatabad and Dabagri Garden plazas will be completed by April this year.

The meeting also has taken several decision to improve road infrastructure to overcome traffic issues in the city.  It was decided to build Ring Road’s missing link on priority basis.

New underpasses, road projects for Peshawar

It was decided in the meeting that seven underpasses will be constructed on Ring Road and University Road to improve traffic flow. Chief Minister directed to complete the feasibility studies for these underpasses within two months.

It has been decided to construct a road to directly link the Industrial Estate with the Northern Bypass. This project will be part of the next annual development programme.

BRT expansion to more cities

The meeting also approved a plan to introduce BRT-style buses in four divisional headquarters including chief minister hometown Dera Ismail Khan. Other cities include Mardan, Swat and Abbottabad.

Eco-friendly buses will be introduced in these cities to improve urban transport and reduce air pollution.

Chief Minister Gandapur vowed to transform Peshawar  into a modern urban center with world-class civic facilities.

“No financial constraints will hinder Peshawar’s progress,” Gandapur said. “We are determined to make this city a true reflection of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s development.”

It has been decided to remove all obstacles disrupting the flow of traffic at different places on University Road within a month
