PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has pledged to introduce stricter measures to protect the endangered Siberian cranes, including banning hunting with shotguns and automatic weapons.

The announcement came during a meeting between Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Wildlife, Pir Musavir Khan, and a delegation from the Crane Union of the southern districts, led by Provincial Minister for Public Health Engineering Malik Pakhtoon Yar Khan.

The delegation raised concerns about crane hunting, licensing, and other related issues.

In response, the provincial minister announced plans to amend existing rules to prohibit crane hunting with modern firearms.

Violators will face legal action under relevant laws.

Moving forward, the government will only issue hunting licenses to those using traditional methods, with regulations being updated to reflect the new policy.

The measures aim to safeguard the dwindling population of Siberian cranes in the region.
