KP to receive fresh spell of rain tonight

According to the latest advisory from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), rain is expected in various parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) starting tonight. The rainfall is predicted to continue intermittently until tomorrow, with the possibility of thunderstorms in several regions. The PDMA has warned that areas including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Malakand, Buner, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, Waziristan, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Bannu, Karak, and Kohat are likely to experience rain accompanied by thunder.

In light of this weather alert, the PDMA has instructed all district administrations to remain vigilant and be prepared for any emergencies. They have been directed to ensure the availability of both heavy and light machinery to address potential road blockages or infrastructure damage.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has announced that the monsoon season in 2025 may begin around June 30 and could last until mid-September. This year, several regions are expected to experience rainfall that exceeds normal levels, with KP potentially seeing 15 to 30 per cent more rainfall than usual during the monsoon season. Rainfall is also on the horizon for cities in Punjab. The coming days are anticipated to bring rain to Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan, and Dera Ismail Khan. Experts believe these sudden changes in weather may help alleviate the current heat, though there are concerns about possible flooding and landslides in certain areas.

The approaching heatwave is expected to make Punjab extremely hot, with cities like Lahore forecasted to reach temperatures exceeding 43 degrees Celsius in the coming days. The public is advised to exercise caution; during rainfall, citizens should avoid power lines, old and unstable buildings, signboards, and billboards to minimise the risk of accidents. Zhob and Barkhan in Balochistan are also forecast to experience rainfall in the following days. The upper estimate for Balochistan during the 2025 monsoon season is an increase of up to 70 to 80 per cent.

The upcoming monsoon is likely to cause flooding on some streets, trigger landslides, and lead to rivers and dams overflowing. Government and emergency officials are advised to adopt advanced strategies to manage these potential risks, according to the NDMA.
