Lashkar-i-Islam founder Mufti Shakir killed in Peshawar blast

PESHAWAR: Mufti Munir Shakir, founder of the outlawed Lashkar-i-Islam, was killed in a blast in Peshawar on Saturday.

The explosion occurred within the jurisdiction of the Armar police station, injuring four people, including Mufti Munir Shakir.

Police identified the other injured individuals as Khushhal, Abid, and Syed Nabi.

Rescue 1122 and police rushed to the site and shifted the injured to Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) for treatment.

LRH spokesperson Asim confirmed that four injured individuals were brought to the hospital, including Mufti Munir Shakir, who was in critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Officials from the Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) arrived at the site to collect evidence. Police said investigations were underway to determine the nature of the explosion.

Lashkar-i-Islam, a Bara-based militant organization, was founded by Mufti Munir Shakir. However, he was expelled from the Bar Qambarkhel area after six months due to his extremist views and conflicts with other militant commanders.

Following his expulsion, Mangal Bagh, a former bus driver-turned-militant, became the amir (chief) of Lashkar-i-Islam in May 2005. The government banned the group in 2008.

In December 2004, Mufti Munir Shakir had formed Lashkar-i-Islam after Sipah and Malikdinkhel tribesmen pledged allegiance to him. However, his hardline ideology led to his removal from the area.
