Locals start evacuation ahead of possible operation in Lower Kurram

KURRAM: A large number of local residents evacuated their villages following the authorities’ decision to conduct a sanitisation operation in Lower Kurram.

The district administration had issued evacuation notices for Bagan, Ochit, Dad Kumar, and Manduri.

The district administration has also set up a registration desk for the displaced persons in the affected areas.

The district administration said that steps are being taken to clear the Kurram of miscreants involved fuelling the dispute and attacks on aid convoys.

Police said that a large number of people have so far left the area following directives of the district administration.

The protesters were demanding the reopening of roads to and from Kurram, which had been closed for the last five months, leaving a population of over 0.5 million without access to essential food items and medical care.

The Parachinar-Tal road- the main high connecting the Kurram with the rest of Pakistan, has been closed for 172 consecutive days. Similarly, the Pak-Afghan Kharlachi border also closed for more than five and half months.

Meanwhile, the process of demolition of bunkers is ongoing in Upper and Lower Kurram.

According to authorities, a total of 672 bunkers have so far been demolished on the warning sides.

Out of these, 407 bunkers were demolished in Upper Kurram and 265 in Lower Kurram.

The decision to demolish the bunkers was taken after the Kohat peace agreement in January this year.
