Monsoon claims 907 lives in Pakistan: NDMA

ISLAMABAD: As many as 907 people have lost their lives during the ongoing monsoon season and floods across Pakistan, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported on Saturday.

According to the latest update, 1,044 people have been injured, while thousands of homes and livestock have been destroyed nationwide.

The provincial breakdown shows Punjab bearing the highest toll with 223 deaths and 654 injuries, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where 502 people died and 218 were injured. Sindh reported 58 deaths and 78 injuries, while Balochistan saw 26 deaths and 5 injuries.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, rains, flash floods, and landslides claimed 41 lives and left 52 injured. Meanwhile, 38 fatalities were reported in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Islamabad recorded nine deaths.

The NDMA further reported the loss of 6,180 livestock animals and damage to 7,848 houses, either partially or completely, due to severe weather.

Amid the worsening conditions, the authority has issued a high-alert warning for Southern Punjab, forecasting thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rains over the next 24 to 48 hours.

The warning covers Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Ahmedpur, Liaqatpur, Zahir Pir, Rajanpur, Khanpur, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, and Sadiqabad. Authorities also cautioned about flash floods in hill torrents and possible landslides in vulnerable areas.
