More than 16,000 cases are pending in Peshawar High Court from 2016 to 2025

PESHAWAR: The number of pending cases in the Peshawar High Court for years has reached an alarming level as 16,040 cases are still awaiting the court’s decision between 2016 and 2025, which shows extraordinary pressure on the judicial system and delays in justice.

Detailed statistics of these cases include Pending cases in single bench: 8,404, Pending cases in division bench: 7,635, Writ petitions: 5,342, Civil revision cases: 2,767, Contempt of court cases 500, Acquittal cases 972, Life imprisonment cases 255, Other important cases pending for years include Death penalty appeals: 34, Court bail applications: 102, Election related appeals: 04, Other election applications: 14. This pendency was only 438 cases pending cases in 2015.

The documents also revealed that till 2015, the number of pending cases in Peshawar High Court was only 438, however, between 2016 and 2025, these numbers rose to 15,602, reflecting judicial slowness, a shortage of judges, and flaws in the system.

Legal experts call the situation a “dangerous disruption of the justice system” and stress that public confidence in the legal system could be eroded if judicial reforms were not implemented. The public circles have expressed severe disappointment over the snail pace of work of the judicial system and und undue delay of cases.
