NADRA urged citizens to avoid unnecessary photocopies of CNIC as they may face identity theft

ISLAMABAD: To avoid identity theft, the the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has issued a public advisory urging citizens to refrain from getting their Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) photocopied unless absolutely necessary.

In an official statement, NADRA emphasised that individuals should not provide photocopies of their CNICs when submitting forms or registering for services.

Citizens are instead urged to bring their original CNICs along with other necessary documents. The authority further clarified that there is no legal basis for requiring photocopies of CNICs for routine procedures.

Highlighting the growing risks of identity theft, NADRA expressed concerns over fraudulent schemes where individuals are duped by criminals posing as officials.

These fraudulent elements often lure victims with promises of financial benefits, prizes, or other incentives, only to illegally obtain personal information, including fingerprints, which can be misused for various purposes.

The advisory also stressed the importance of exercising caution, particularly at NADRA centres, where such incidents have been reported. Citizens were urged to remain vigilant and avoid handing over their CNICs as collateral for any services or prizes.

According to NADRA, the decision to stop the unnecessary photocopying of CNICS is part of broader efforts to protect individuals from becoming victims of identity theft and to ensure that personal data is kept secure.
