India’s approach toward regional policies can damage its relations with China: Mushahid Hussain

ISLAMABAD: Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, a senior Pakistani politician and chairman of the Senate Defence Committee, issued a strong rebuke of India’s regional policies, warning that New Delhi’s unilateral actions are jeopardising South Asian stability and could also strain its relations with China.

He made these remarks during a high-profile seminar held in Islamabad, which brought together diplomats, scholars, and experts in international affairs to examine the broader implications of India’s recent moves on regional geopolitics, particularly regarding water resources and cross-border relations.

In a pointed critique, Senator Hussain stated, “India’s use of water as a strategic weapon constitutes a crime against humanity.” He was referring to India’s management of transboundary rivers under the Indus Waters Treaty — a longstanding but increasingly strained water-sharing agreement between India and Pakistan.

The senator accused India of violating the spirit of regional cooperation by taking unilateral steps that disregard international norms and bilateral agreements. “Such actions not only escalate tensions with Pakistan but also undermine India’s global standing,” he said.

Hussain warned that the ripple effects of India’s approach could extend beyond its western border, potentially damaging its complex and often fraught relationship with China. “In today’s interconnected world, aggressive posturing and strategic adventurism carry consequences. India’s policies risk isolating it diplomatically and economically,” he added.

Several other participants in the seminar echoed these concerns, urging renewed dialogue and regional cooperation to prevent further escalation. The event concluded with calls for adherence to international law, respect for multilateral treaties, and the prioritisation of diplomacy over confrontation.

The seminar comes at a time of heightened regional tensions, particularly in the context of India’s infrastructure development near disputed borders, and ongoing disagreements over water management between South Asian nations. Observers warn that without constructive engagement, such disputes could further destabilise an already volatile region.
