NDMA issues nationwide alert for monsoon rains

Islamabad, parts of KP hit by heavy rains

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide alert, warning of intense monsoon rains and possible flooding in several regions over the next 24 to 48 hours.

High-altitude areas, including Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, and Kumrat Valley, face the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) due to accelerated glacier melt in locations like Badswat, Hunarche, Tarsat Hundur, Darkut, and Ishkoman.

In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, heavy rainfall is likely to affect Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Bagh, and Kotli, potentially leading to urban flooding.

Parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa—such as Peshawar, Mardan, Swat, Dir, Kohistan, Bannu, Karak, and Waziristan, are expected to experience strong windstorms, thunderstorms, and heavy rain.

Major cities in Punjab, including Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Kasur, and Mandi Bahauddin, are at risk of flash flooding.

In Balochistan, heavy rain and dusty winds are forecasted in Quetta, Ziarat, Khuzdar, Zhob, Sibi, Dera Bugti, and Loralai.

Sindh cities such as Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar, Badin, Umerkot, and Jacobabad may also see significant rainfall, with a threat of waterlogging and power outages in low-lying areas.

Mountainous areas in Gilgit-Baltistan and AJK, including Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Rawalakot, Haveli, and Hattian Bala, face heightened risk of landslides triggered by heavy rain.

The NDMA has urged the public to avoid weak structures, mud walls, electric poles, and billboards during windstorms. Reduced visibility could also increase the risk of road accidents.

All provincial and local disaster management authorities have been directed to take precautionary measures to prevent loss of life and property.

Citizens are advised to stay alert and updated through the NDMA Disaster Alert mobile app, which provides real-time weather updates and safety tips.
