NDMA: Monsoon rains to persist for three more days

ISLAMABAD: Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, has said that the ongoing monsoon spell is expected to continue for another three days in Pakistan.

While briefing the media on the flood situation alongside Federal Minister for Climate Change Murtaza Malik. He said that the recent devastating rains and floods have resulted in over 900 fatalities across the country.

NDMA chairman further said that water flow at Head Panjnad and Guddu Barrage remains high, and rescue operations are ongoing nationwide, adding that so far, 2.4 million people have been relocated to safer locations in Punjab and 150,000 in Sindh.

He expressed gratitude to the welfare organizations actively involved in relief efforts and emphasized that all relevant institutions are working together to improve future preparedness.

Inam Haider further revealed that floods have caused extensive damage to crops, and in some areas, protective embankments had to be deliberately breached to reduce the water pressure.

NDMA chief also warned of more rain expected in central Punjab and Azad Kashmir between September 16 and 18, adding that rising temperatures and rapid glacial melting are intensifying climate-related challenges.
