New monsoon spell set to hit country tomorrow: PMD

Above-average rainfall predicted for Pakistan's 2025 monsoon season

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted a new spell of monsoon rains across the country starting tomorrow (Monday), warning of possible urban flooding and river surges.

According to the PMD, rainfall is expected from July 28 to 31 in Islamabad, parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and various cities in Punjab, with a potential rise in water levels in the Chenab and Jhelum rivers. Balochistan is likely to receive rain from July 29 to 31, while Sindh may experience showers on July 30 and 31.

Heavy downpours could trigger flash floods in local streams, urban flooding in low-lying areas, and landslides in mountainous regions.

In Hafizabad’s Sukheke area, stagnant rainwater remains uncleared from several villages even after ten days, disrupting mobility and causing hardships for residents. In Kashmore, the Indus River is rising at Guddu Barrage, with fluctuations also reported at Taunsa Barrage. Layyah has seen over 70 villages submerged due to river overflow, prompting ongoing rescue and relief efforts by local authorities.

Meanwhile, Rawal Dam’s water level has reached 1,750 feet, and spillways have been opened as a precautionary measure.
