New Zealand’s Tom Latham ruled out of ODI series against Pakistan with hand injury

Injured Latham out of Pakistan ODIs, Bracewell continues as NZ captain

New Zealand’s wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against Pakistan due to a hand injury, leaving Michael Bracewell to continue as captain.

Latham, who was set to lead the side in the absence of regular white-ball skipper Mitchell Santner—currently engaged in the Indian Premier League (IPL)—suffered a fracture while batting in the nets and will require at least four weeks to recover, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed in a statement on Thursday.

Bracewell, who recently captained New Zealand to a 4-1 T20 series victory over Pakistan, will now take charge of the ODI squad as well. The series begins on Saturday in Napier.

In another setback for the hosts, opener Will Young will miss the last two ODIs to be with his wife as they await the birth of their first child.

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed disappointment over Latham’s injury but expressed confidence in Bracewell’s leadership. “It’s obviously disappointing to lose Tom as captain on the eve of the series, and we wish him a speedy recovery,” Stead said. “The side is in safe hands with Michael, who’s done a great job through the T20I series.”

Henry Nicholls, returning from a calf strain, has been named as Latham’s replacement, while Mitch Hay will take over wicketkeeping duties. Canterbury batsman Rhys Mariu, who received his maiden call-up, will provide batting cover.

Stead acknowledged the challenges of managing an injury-hit squad, stating, “We’ve had to be flexible this tour with numerous players unavailable for different reasons. What it does do is offer opportunities to other players, and it’s nice to introduce Rhys into the environment for the first time, as well as welcome back Henry.”

The ODI series will be crucial for both teams as they continue their preparations ahead of major upcoming tournaments.
