ISLAMABAD: The Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC), a body of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), strongly condemned the growing wave of Islamophobia, hate speech, and retaliatory violence against muslims in India and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) following the Pahalgam incident.
In a statement issued Friday, the IPHRC called for an impartial international investigation into the violence, urging protection of civilians and accountability for those responsible. It criticised far-right Hindu groups for scapegoating Muslims and reminded India of its international legal obligations under treaties such as the ICCPR, ICESCR, and ICERD.
Reaffirming its rejection of India’s post-2019 measures—like the revocation of Article 370 and demographic shifts—the Commission emphasised these actions undermine Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.
It also demanded the restoration of civil liberties, the release of political detainees, and unrestricted international access to the region, including by United Nations (UN) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) observers.
Although the IPHRC’s findings are not legally binding, they hold diplomatic influence and can aid global advocacy efforts, especially within the UN Human Rights Council. The Commission urged the UN to consider sending a fact-finding mission or establishing a Commission of Inquiry to document ongoing rights violations.
