Pak special envoy for Afghanistan holds talks in Kabul to strengthen bilateral ties

Pakistan’s special envoy meets Afghan foreign minister in Kabul

Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Muhammad Sadiq Khan, arrived in Kabul on Saturday with the aim of promoting bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in various fields, according to  Radio Pakistan.

The visit, undertaken on the instructions of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, comes at a critical time as Pakistan grapples with a surge in militant attacks.

The trip follows the reopening of the Pak-Afghan crossing point at Torkham, which resumed operations for patients and cargo transport on Wednesday evening after being closed for more than 27 days. The closure was lifted after successful talks between tribal jirgas from both countries.

The border was initially closed on Feb. 21 after Afghan forces attempted to establish a border post in a disputed area, sparking armed clashes between the two nations’ security forces. Tensions escalated when Afghan security forces reportedly resorted to heavy firing and shelling, resulting in the death of one civilian and injuries to several others.

Authorities from both countries have confirmed that normal pedestrian movement across the border is expected to resume in the coming days. Pakistan has repeatedly emphasized that construction in prohibited or restricted areas cannot proceed without prior consultation.
