ISLAMABAD: Pakistan planned to issue a notice to New Delhi through diplomatic channels over India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
The ministries of water resources and law, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have completed the initial homework. Sources said that it has been decided to give a formal notice to India through diplomatic channels in a few days, in which concrete reasons will be sought for the suspension of the said treaty. Pakistan also considered registering a strong protest at international forums so that India’s water aggression can be effectively brought to the attention of the world. A think tank comprising experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Water Resources and the Indus Water Commission will give its opinion on the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty to the cabinet on an urgent basis, after which the Prime Minister will decide on further strategy based on the opinion of the experts.
According to media reports, any countermeasures to the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty by India will be taken after the approval of the government and cabinet. Sources said that in Indus Water Commission, Pakistan’s legal and constitutional position is stronger than India’s, and India has unilaterally taken the wrong step by deviating from the Indus Water Treaty.
According to experts, Pakistan has legal precedence over the Indus Water Treaty, it is hoped that India will have to review its decision soon. According to media reports, the Indus Water Commission is constantly working on legal and constitutional consultations on India’s suspension of the Indus Waters.
