ISLAMABAD:Pakistan Railways faced a severe safety crisis in the first 11 days of August 2025, with six separate train accidents occurring across its network, raising serious concerns about passenger safety and infrastructure integrity.
The alarming series of incidents began on August 1st when the Islamabad Express met with an accident near Kala Shah Kaku. This incident resulted in injuries to more than 25 passengers. The very next day, August 2nd, a bogie of the Pak Business Express derailed within the Washing Line area.
The accidents continued on August 8th with a freight train derailing at Faisalabad Dry Port. The following day, August 9th, saw the Chak Jhumra Mianwali Express derail. On August 10th, the Awam Express derailed at Rahim Yar Khan. The sequence culminated on the night of August 11th when two bogies of the Musa Pak Express derailed at Raiwind.
Internal sources within Pakistan Railways directly attributed this spate of accidents to widespread damage and deterioration of railway tracks across the country. The frequency of the incidents within such a short timeframe has intensified scrutiny on the department’s maintenance protocols and safety measures.
In response to the crisis, a Railways spokesperson acknowledged the situation and stated that concerted efforts are underway to prevent future accidents. The spokesperson emphasized that track improvement and repair work is actively ongoing in various sections of the national network to address the underlying infrastructure issues.
