PESHAWAR/KARACHI: The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has confirmed three new polio cases in Pakistan, two in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and one in Sindh, bringing the nationwide tally for 2025 to 17.
According to reports, the new cases were detected in North Waziristan, Lakki Marwat, and Umerkot. KP now accounts for 10 of the total cases, with the latest involving a 19-month-old boy from Miranshah—marking the province’s eighth case from North Waziristan this year.
The confirmation was made by the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad.
Polio, a highly contagious and incurable disease, can only be prevented through repeated oral vaccinations administered to children under five. However, vaccination efforts in KP continue to face challenges due to geographical barriers, social resistance, and security concerns, hindering full immunisation coverage despite frequent government-led campaigns.
